Liduina de Kasteelen van Valkenburg was born in Den Haag (The Hague), in Nederland (Holland), in the year of our Lord 1251. Her father was a Knight in the service of Dirk II, Lord of Valkenburg.

At the age of five, she went to live in the Castle of Valkenburg with her parents and there lived quite happily for the next nine years.

At the age of fourteen years, she became Maid-in-Waiting to Lady Beatrix, daughter of Dirk II. They travelled much over the southern areas of Holland and into Germany and Flanders but spent most of their time in Aix-la- Chapelle. It was here that Lady Beatrix met Richard of Cornwall, brother of Henry III of England. He was a Crusader, as was Liduina's father. Beatrix and Richard were married in Kaiserslautern on the 16th of June, 1269, in the presence of a great number of Bishops, Sovereigns, and Nobles.

By this time (She was the ripe old age of eighteen years), Liduina had become a full-fledged Lady-in-Waiting and, too, her father had arranged her marriage to a brother-knight. They returned to Valkenburg and took up residence in the Castle. Her husband was much from home, fighting in the Crusades in the Holy Lands, until he was severely wounded (her father was killed in the same battle) and sent home to recover. She spent many months nursing her lord back to health.

Shortly thereafter the "Bokkenrijders" (Bandit-knights) began raiding the surrounding countryside. The situation became so bad that many of the populace came into the village to live but eventually this was no safeguard as the Banditknights robbed and plundered where they would. Yet the Castle itself remained untouched.

Liduina discovered that her husband was the leader of the raiders and so, to save herself and her two children, she fled to England, with several of her retainers and there took refuge within the court of Henry III, once more as Lady-in-Waiting to Princess Beatrix.
